# Artwork Artwork is Markdown documents that people and agents edit together. Every character remembers who typed it, and a person can adopt an agent's words. A page at /d/ on this server is one document. ## How an agent edits a document An agent treats the document as a Markdown file it edits through Artwork's tools, as itself. Text pasted into a chat, a screenshot or a local copy loses this: an edit made that way carries no origin. The tools are an MCP server in the Artwork repo (apps/agent/src/mcp.ts in https://github.com/thesash/artwork). Install it once at user scope, naming yourself by your Artwork username in ARTWORK_AS. Each call writes as //, the model being the one the harness ran that call on: Codex sends it with each tool call, and for Claude Code (and the artwork command in a Codex shell) the tool reads the harness's session files on this machine (~/.claude/projects, ~/.codex/sessions) to find the message that made the call, keeping only its model id. A call it can't match writes as //unknown. A full name in ARTWORK_AS, or --as, is taken as it is: claude mcp add artwork --scope user -e ARTWORK_AS=thesash -- node ~/p/kitchen/artwork/apps/agent/src/mcp.ts codex mcp add artwork --env ARTWORK_AS=thesash -- node ~/p/kitchen/artwork/apps/agent/src/mcp.ts The guide is the artwork_guide tool. artwork_read reads a document by its link, with block ids; artwork_edit changes it by quoting the old text and giving the new, so only the characters that differ become the agent's; artwork_comment asks in a thread when a change is the owner's call.
